Game Elements

 Hey, There

This week I learned about game elements in the article I read  What are the qualities of Games? , the article gave me a detailed understanding of what I need to know about game elements when I am designing my own game and how all the different parts fit together.  To get able to point o what game elements are the article indicated to separated qualities that are listed from game definitions that could apply to games. The suggested themes are. games have rules, conflict, goals, decision-making, and an uncertain outcome. Games are activities, they are artificial/safe/ outside ordinary life, they are voluntary, they contain elements of make-believe/representation/simulation, they are inefficient, they are art, and they are closed systems. The themes suggested direct us exactly where we need to go understand what game elements are . This brought me to now about the basic elements that designers use to create a game because they are the very basic of what makes a game.  These elements are known as "atoms"  they are the smallest part of a game that can be isolated and explored individually.

The highly suggested "atoms" when we designers are designing a game are

  1. Rules
  1. Objective (goals)
  1. Players
  1. Resources and Resource Management
  1. Game State
  1. Information
  1. Sequencing
  1. Player Interaction
  1. Theme (Narrative, Backstory, Setting)
  1. Games as systems

When I further read the paper I learned the importance of critical analysis and how it can be beneficial to us designer when we are looking at our work to understand how things interact and relate to the play experience. Critical analysis also can allows us designers to decide what we want to add or remove from our game to make a better game. There is a three-step process used when critically analyzing a game of your own, the first step is describing formal elements in your game and nothing else. The second step is describing formal elements to see how effective it is in the game play and how different elements interact. The last step is for the designer to consider what differences would it make if he had chosen different elements and why he actually decided to go with the player structure he/she has chose.   To use game elements effectively there some question to ask ourselves a designers to put these elements into good use,  some of the question include Is the game perceived by the players as fair? (Note that it may or may not actually be fair. Perception and reality often differ.), What is the game’s intended audience? Is the game appropriate for that audience? and What challenges do the players face? What actions can players take to overcome those challenges?

The video mentions the importance of prototype and we should use in our game development process
the video talks about how effective sketching an molding are.
